The massive Lake Eyre system covers an area of 9,690 square kilometres, roughly the size of Holland. Nearly one-sixth of Australia's landmass drains into Lake Eyre, but it has filled to capacity only three times in the past 150 years and it is in flood right now! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the inland sea of Australis in flood as well as the hundred of thousands of birds that have flocked to the lake.

Pacific Island Travel: this site has a remarkably concise bio of the great man that the Lake is named after. Edward John Eyre (1815-1901), together with his aboriginal friend Wylie, was the first man to cross southern
Australia from east to west, travelling across the Nullarbor Plain from Adelaide to Albany. Eyre travelled westward across what is now known as Eyre Peninsula and along the coast. They would have to travel 1 300 kilometres through harsh desolate country. There was little water and very few ways to reach the sea because of the huge cliffs. For a more remarkable facts and what this great man achieved check out this site.great in site into on the remarkable achievement of one man check out this site.
